Matt joined Venrock in 2004. He is based in Venrock’s Palo Alto office and focuses on energy technology investing. Matt led Venrock’s investments in Transonic Combustion, Atieva, Phononic Devices, Nest Labs and FINsix and is a board member of those companies.
From 2000 to 2004, Matt investigated energy-related applications of nanotechnology and became networked among the nascent “clean tech” community. He co-founded two software companies: LiquidMarket, a product search and comparison shopping service that was acquired by NBC Internet in 1999, and Flash Communications, an instant messaging technology that was acquired by Microsoft in 1998. Previously, Matt traded currency derivatives for Banque Paribas in London, Singapore and New York, and practiced international project finance for Sanwa Bank in Tokyo. His prior experience also includes applied superconductivity research at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, real-time signal processing at Mercedes-Benz research and development in Stuttgart, and technology scouting from the then recently independent Czech Republic.
Matt earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MS in Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
